The next commercial came on, broadcast straight from Earth to please the sponsors of Cyborg House, M.D. The crew of the Nelson Mandela, a Peacekeeper class patrol cruiser, are primarily relaxing, trying to keep themselves entertained as the ship fulfilled its mission of making sure that methane miners out here in the Kuiper belt didn't blow each other up while competing for stakes.

It was 40 years ago today that humanity had first discovered means by which ships could travel faster than the speed of light. Much faster. Traveling through the solar system was near instantaneous. To Alpha Centauri took mere days, and that trip is getting shorter, much to the glee of the colonists that now live in stations orbiting the rocky planets found in that system. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the strain of overpopulation is easing, its populace now about stable at 11 billion after migrations to the planetary colonies on Mars, Venus, and Io, and to orbital habitats. Humanity is on the upswing, and ain't nothing gonna keep it down.

A call to general quarters woke up the crew of the Nelson Mandela, and suddenly all across the modest-sized ship everything was in movement. On the bridge, deep within the core of the vessel, Captain Aloysius Starr watched what had caused him to make the call to battle stations. It was a ship, that had come out of FTL out here in the Kuiper Belt. It also clearly wasn't human.

"Comms, initiate Sagan Protocols, and alert EarthCom that we may have just made first contact."

"Yes sir, broadcasting now-"

"Missile launch detected! Time until impact 1 minute, eighteen seconds!"

"Detecting multiple ships now, Captain..."

It is the year 2192, and humanity hangs on by the skin of its teeth. Earth managed to survive relatively intact before the arrival of humanity's first friendly alien contact, the Vohnn, who arrived just in time to allow humanity a chance to survive. However, the aliens attackers, known now as the Kriegar, destroyed many orbital platforms, mining vessels, the entire Io colony, and whatever military vessels humanity could muster. Humanity is now fifteen billion hungry people, whose main food sources have been damaged nearly beyond repair. The Vohnn, meanwhile, continue to weigh defending humanity while their own territory and people are also beset by the Kriegar. Humanity will not be able to depend on their protection forever. If we are to survive, we must rebuild.

And to rebuild, we will need help. And that's where you come in.

The UN, gaining new powers after the Kriegar attack and becoming humanity's de facto central government, has desperately gathered all the ships it can muster, to create humanity's one chance of salvation: the Trade Armada. These ships, sent out in groups of four or five, to contact other races that the Vohnn have pointed to as potentially helpful, and to seek out new worlds for humanity to explore, colonize, and begin its expansion anew.

You are the crew of one of these vessels.

Biological Crew Member Template:

RACE: At least one human each player. After that, feel free to make robots and aliens. However, note that the only friendly race humanity has met yet is the Vohnn.
POSITION: As a member of the crew. Pilot, Engineer, Soldier, Etc.
APPEARANCE: Clothing, hairstyle, noticeable markings, etc.

ASSETS: Your character's useful inherent skills. Keen reflexes, excellent aim, the immense strength of a Zehnn, they all go here.

EQUIPMENT: Guns, personal scanners, ancient unidentified alien artifacts, etc.
Bionics: Be the six million dollar man. Note that this is redundant on robots, so for those ignore this space..
PERSONALITY: What makes your character tick. Is he a nice guy, or a mean bastard? What hobbies does she pursue? Et cetera and so forth.

Robo Template (lovingly stolen from StevenFC):

Designation: Model Number, Clone Batch, Chosen Name
Designers: Which species built your AI? Humans? Vohnn? Other Robots? You Decide!
Make and Model: Is this living machine one of a million off some assembly line? Or is it a totally unique intelligence built by an eccentric scientist in a secret laboratory? YOU, again, DECIDE!
Classification: What does this AI do? What, at least, was it designed to do? Is it a simple load lifter for shipping and unloading? Is it a soldier? A scientist? Engineer? Servant? Or is it a state-of-the-art supercomputer built directly into a starship, capable of plotting FTL jumps across thousands of light years?
Automated Intelligence Rating: How smart is this robot? Can it beat Turing at chess? Is it basically six Roombas welded together?
Automated Intelligence Medium: Organic or Non-Organic? Any Vohnn Alliance AIs are cloned Brains grafted to machine bodies. The Vohnn never quite figured out computer AI. Basically, is your AI a Clone, A Brain in a Machine Body, or an actual Intelligent Computer?
Body Type, Weight, Height: How big is this thing? What does it sort of look like? Humanoid? Vohnoid? Totally alien looking?
Assets and Equipment: What is this machine capable of? What's built into it? What tools can it use or does it have any of it's own?
Flaws: Design problems, intelligence issues, propensities for glitches, etc.
Personality: Self explanatory

Captain: Will be an NPC, the character of whom shall be decided later.
Second in Command: Dude below the dude what runs the whole shebang.
Alien Observer: The guy actually in charge. Maybe. This character is definitely an alien, though doesn't have to be the only one. This person is an alien watching over the crew of what is technically its property. Starting out, likely a member of the Vohnn Alliance, but that could change with time. This character probably has technical, tactical, historical, and scientific knowledge far beyond most of the human crew. This character can probably be played by anyone with any race they like or would like to invent. It could even be a weekly, rotating position.
Pilot: For a larger ship like this one, we will probably need multiple pilots. Additionally, we should have a compliment of fighters/bombers/drones that will make use of pilots.
Trader/Businessman/Merchant: What're you buyin'? The resources to keep your species from extinction, dummy! Wheel and deal, motherfucker! You've got quotas to meet and if you don't ENTIRE ORPHANAGES STARVE/SUFFOCATE/ARE BLOWN INTO SPACE. DON'T MESS THIS UP, BUDDY.
Chief Engineer and Engineerlings: One Chieftan, many subordinates. We could even specialize them if we wanted. Want to be the only guy/gal onboard who understands the until now theoretical physics powering the Vohnn InterWarp Drive Core? Just want to be the dude who cleans out the ship's waste and organic matter recyclers? YOU GOT IT.
Communications Officer: Look, it sounds like a joke, but it's important. You're the dude who knows all the important encryption codes and shit. Communicating through FTL Comm Relays across billions of miles of deep space isn't as easy as making a goddamn phone call.
Military Advisor? Chief Tactical Officer? That One Works: This might be some peacenik hippy bullshit spaceship, but it still needs somebody who understands space combat and warfare. You are the only fucker on this ship with a direct line to Earth's military command, and you're the only person who might realize Warping right into a Cryxik Dreadnaught's sensor grid would be awful and stupid.
SPHESS MAHRIIIIIINES: WE NEED SOME SPHESSSZZZZZ MAHREEEEENES. GOTTA HAVE SPHEZZZ MACHRAAAANES. SECURITY, SECURING TACTICALLY CRUCIAL THINGS, GENERAL BADASSERY.
Ship's Computer: Might be cool to be the machine brain of a giant space ship. Just sayin'.
Diplomat/Ambassador/Xenobiologist: Someone with a little more tact and grace than a space trucker and a blood-crazed general. Somebody to secure those crucial alliances and avoid unnecessary bloodshed.
Chief Medical and Underlings: Gotta have a doctor. Doctor's tend to be the some of the coolest characters. Except Dr. Crusher, I guess. And whoever replaced her for one season. Ugh, she was terrible. Polanski, or something, right?
Chief Scientist and Sciencelings: Somebody in charge of explaining away problems with technobabble. Must know what a black hole is, and why flying towards it turns everyone insane.
