Default Mal Crafts

Sometimes I do arts and crafts. Most of the time I post them in my journal thread but I thought it might be nice to have it all in its own place.

I'll add stuff I've done in the past later but for now, this is what I did yesterday and today.

Coco from Animal Crossing because she is my favorite villager! I'd never worked with clay before I made my Malon brooch, but I found it very soothing and decided I'd like to try my hand at it more often. I can already see a ton of things I could have done better but I'm pleased with her. I learned a lot.

Here are the sides so you can see her tail and stuff! My biggest issue was in attaching the pieces. I think I now have a better idea of how to do that without showing seams so much.

Yaaaaaaaay!

I am probably most proud of the head shape, eye sockets and mouth, and gradient on the skirt.

Yay! I will monitor this thread. I'm trying to think of puns, like "Mal's Contents," or something. Also, do you have a picture of that whale you knitted? Still have it in my living room! Love it bunches. And like I said on Facebook, this sculpt is awesome! I really cannot say just how much I love the detail. I thought you'd bought one.

Thank you so much; that means a lot. :') I started with Animal Crossing because the designs and proportions can be fairly simple, but I really tried to get close to her model.

As for the title, I was trying to think of one as well. Mal Wares or something, but that implies I'm selling what I make. Also while we're on the subject I guess you can say the clay was malleable :v

And yaaay I'm so glad you liked that whale! Now is as good a time as any to put pictures of the things I've crocheted, so in order of creation:

Pattern from Pepika.

Pattern by June Gilbank at Planet June.

I got this pattern from an Amigurumi book I bought. I cannot recall the name at the moment.

Group shot!

Pattern by Linda Potts at Wolf Dreamer.

Mal, what kind of clay did you use for Coco? Did you have to fire it at all, or does it just air-dry?

I used Fimo Soft in white, and you have to fire it. A conventional oven works perfectly fine for me. I put the pieces on a flat piece of stone tile with a piece of computer paper between the project and the stone. I also covered it with an aluminum pie pan to protect it further and then baked it at 275 degrees.

Here's a picture from just after taking the pieces out of the oven:

The clay started out really white but darkened to that peach color. Something to keep in mind if you want to sculpt without painting. I think there are ways to minimize darkening (the aluminum helps with browning, for example) but the color change during baking can be pretty noticeable. I didn't look into it too much since I was going to be painting my project.

Thanks for the heads-up. How did you attach the pieces? I had assumed they were already attached before she went into the oven.

I superglued them after painting. The only ones I attached before painting were the ears, and the glue and seam were most obvious there when I started to paint.

What I want to try next time is perhaps putting some sort of support to link pieces before firing, like maybe wire or something? Then I could erase the seams and everything would already be held together. My only issue with that is that it could be hard to paint it as one whole piece. Being able to pick each piece up made the painting muuuuch easier than I'd imagine it would have been if there had been a bunch of crevices I had to get into with a brush.

Something else I've considered is carving holes into the pieces to insert other pieces. So like, if I had dug some holes out on the top of her head and inserted and glued the ears after firing and painting, maybe the seams wouldn't have been so obvious? But I feel like that'd take a pretty precise hand to make holes the correct size.

fun fact.

i didn't notice until after I made her, but the buttons for her eyes are slightly different sizes, and the eyebrows are slightly different lengths. the bigger eye has a shorter eyebrow, and the smaller eye has a longer eyebrow

and even though this was a mistake i kinda like it haha

Gloves are hard. Did you make the entire thing from scratch, or did you find gloves and alter them?

They suuure are. The gloves themselves I bought and altered by cutting off the fingers and hemming them.

I made the cuff from scratch, though!
